This post launches a new survey we’re conducting over the next few weeks. You can take the survey here, with a chance of winning one of two prizes.
As the UK emerges from lockdown once more – and this time with more optimism due to the rapidly accelerating program with an extremely effective vaccine – it seems that life may never be quite the same again, or at least for some time. You could make the same argument for retail, as we pass the 12-month mark for the current period of extreme trading uncertainty.
At the beginning of this year, eMarketer predicted that global ecommerce will be almost $5 trillion this year, a 14% increase on 2020 which itself was the breakout year for ecommerce. Ecommerce’s share of total retail will be around 19.5%, a further increase on a year where we saw the share jump from 13.6% to 18%. These figures paint a picture of impressive growth, but they mask the actual experience of almost every online seller, when 2020 was anything but smooth sailing.
Sellers experienced a host of issues. Some were overly reliant on physical retail. Some saw demand for their category plummet. Others experienced an unprecedented rush on their products, while others experienced serious supply chain issues. Now we see the effects of the Brexit hangover and brace ourselves for similar changes in EU customs and tax from the 1st July.
Whatever our own experiences, they have definitely coloured how we view 2021 and beyond. Some of us have resolved to be better prepared for the next bump in the road, if that’s possible. Some of us may feel entitled to think, ‘What’s the point of long term planning? How can we possibly look more than 3 months ahead in the current environment?’
Here’s your chance to have your say. It’ll only take you a few minutes to complete the survey and you’ll be in with a chance of winning one of two £75 Amazon vouchers. We’ll also be publishing the results of the survey which we’ll provide to everyone who completes it. Thank you in advance for your time!
